Flat Roofing Explained
Flat roofing refers to any form of roof that is almost level. For many of us, when we hear the term flat roof the first thing that comes to mind is a garage or single storey kitchen extension. There are many other places where flat roofs are found, ranging from the top of a bay window or a narrow "box gutter" in-between two sections of a tiled roof, to large rooftop spaces on top of high rise buildings.
No flat roof should be completely horizontal - there needs to be a slight incline for any rainwater to drain away, however in most cases the slope is so slight it is hardly noticeable to the naked eye.
Nearly all flat roofs consist of the same basic elements, a plasterboard ceiling on the inside of the building, a substrate or decking layer (usually constructed of plywood or OSB board), insulation (either above or below the decking) and the waterproof covering that is visible from the outside of the building
When should I get my flat roof checked?
If you notice any of the following on your flat roof it should be inspected by a professional roofer as soon as possible:
Cracks or tears in the roofing material
Material peeling away at joints or where it joins a wall
Water ponding or pooling (puddles of water that do not drain away after 48 hours)
Dark stains on ceilings or at the top of walls
Water dripping down walls during or after rainfall
If you notice any of these signs in your building it needs to be addressed as soon as possible to prevent any further damage.
