Severnside Scaffolding — Common Scaffolding Terminology  Welcome to Severnside Scaffolding’s guide to scaffolding terminology. Whether you’re a homeowner planning a renovation, a site manager overseeing a large project, or simply curious about how scaffolding works, this glossary explains the most common terms in clear, plain English.  Understanding these words helps you communicate confidently with contractors and ensures your project runs smoothly and safely.

Scaffolding Components — Glossary

Base Plate — A steel plate placed at the bottom of scaffold standards (vertical tubes) to spread the load and prevent sinking.  Bay — The horizontal space between two standards. Bays form the grid of a scaffold.  Board (Scaffold Board) — Timber or metal planks laid across the scaffold to create a working platform.  Bracing — Diagonal tubes or braces that stabilise the scaffold against sway and movement.  Coupler — A fitting used to connect two tubes together. Types include right-angle, swivel, and sleeve couplers.  Handrail — A guardrail fixed at the edge of a working platform, or along the edge of a building, to prevent falls.  Ledger — A horizontal tube running parallel to the building face, supporting transoms and boards.  Lift — One level of a scaffold, typically describing the vertical stages.  Loading Bay — A reinforced section of scaffold designed to safely receive and hold heavy materials.  Putlog — A short tube used in traditional scaffolds to support boards, fixed into the wall or structure.  Sole Plate — A wooden or metal plate placed beneath the base plate to spread loads, particularly on soft ground.  Standard — The vertical tube that transfers scaffold loads down to the ground.  Tie — A connection that secures the scaffold to the building to stop movement or collapse.  Toe Board — A low barrier fixed at the platform edge to stop materials or tools from falling.  Transom — A short horizontal tube placed across ledgers to support boards.  Tube & Fitting — The traditional scaffold method using galvanised tubes and couplers, flexible for complex structures.  Working Load / SWL (Safe Working Load) — The maximum weight a scaffold can safely carry.

Safety & Regulations

At Severnside Scaffolding, safety is our top priority. All scaffolds are erected by trained, competent scaffolders and inspected regularly to comply with UK regulations such as the Work at Height Regulations.  Key safety points:  Scaffolds must always be inspected after erection, alterations, and at least every 7 days.  Scaffold tags indicate safety status: green (safe), yellow (restricted), red (unsafe).  Bracing, guardrails, and ties are essential to scaffold stability.

TG20:21 Explained  TG20:21 is the latest edition of the National Access and Scaffolding Confederation (NASC) guidance for tube-and-fitting scaffolding in the UK. It provides standardised, compliant designs for common scaffold structures without needing bespoke engineering calculations.   TG20:21 includes:  Compliance sheets — easy-to-follow drawings showing safe designs for common scaffolds.  Digital guidance — an online and app-based resource for scaffold designers and contractors.  Updates to regulations — aligning with the latest British and European standards.  By following TG20:21, contractors and clients can be confident that scaffolds are built to nationally recognised safety and performance standards. At Severnside Scaffolding, we work strictly in line with TG20:21 to ensure every scaffold is safe, legal, and fit for purpose.  What’s new in TG20:21 compared to TG20:13?  Digital-first approach — TG20:21 introduced an updated eGuide with easier navigation and mobile access.  Expanded compliance sheets — More scaffold types are covered, including design options for higher loads and greater flexibility.  Improved clarity — Simplified guidance for end users, making it easier for contractors and clients to understand.  Regulatory alignment — TG20:21 reflects the most up-to-date British and European standards, ensuring full compliance.  These improvements mean safer scaffolds, clearer communication, and better efficiency for projects of all sizes.

Frequently Asked Questions
