SLATE & TILE ROOFS

Slate & Tile roofs explained

Tiles

Clay tiles
Clay has been used to produce roof tiles for hundreds of years. Clay tiles provide a durable, long lasting and aesthetically appealing roof covering on homes and commercial buildings.
Clay tiles are available in a variety of colours, shapes and sizes so you can change the look of your building to suit your taste.
As with all roof coverings it is important to check that the style of clay tile you choose is suitable for the building structure and location.
Concrete tiles
Concrete tiles are an alternative to clay tiles and come in a wide variety of styles to suit most applications. Concrete tiles are usually lighter than their clay counterparts and are thought to be less prone to cracking in colder weather.

Slate Roof  Natural Slate Natural slate tiles originate from quarries from many locations all over the world. As slate is a natural product each quarry will produce slates with a unique colour, pattern and texture. Natural slate is known for its resistance to everyday wear and tear and is a popular choice to provide a traditional luxury look to a building Artificial Slate A popular alternative to natural slate, artificial slates are manufactured to mimic natural slate without the environmental impact of excavating natural materials from the ground. Most artificial slates are manufactured from fibre cement and are available in a wide range of colours and patterns to give a similar appearance as natural slate.

Underfelt or Sarking felt is an underlay that is positioned beneath the tiles of a roof to provide a secondary defence against windblown rain. Problems can occur if the layer is not correctly installed, such as water ingress into the timber of the eaves or into the wall structure.  Breather membrane is a popular choice for many roof installations that provides a barrier to windblow rain, whilst also alowing air to escape reducing the possibility of condensation forming.
